"Without decision-making power over our bodies, there in no democracy. Opposing women's right to control our own bodies is the first step in every authoritarian regime." Gloria Steinem, who became nationally recongned as a leader for the American feminist movement in the late 1960s and early 1970s, said in a media interview to criticize the ban on abortion.

Her remarks came immediately after the Supreme Court denied a request from abortion providers to block the so-called "Hearbeat Act", a Texas law that bans abortions after six weeks of pregnancy.

According to the Texas abortion law that went into effect last fall, a physician may not perform or induce an abortion ona pregnant woman if the physician detected a fetal heartbeat for the unborn child. The law defines six weeks as the point where a fetal heartbeat appears.

Unlike the Supreme Court which is increasingly conservative, the American public largely supprts legalized abortion. In a recent survey, 54% of Americans say the court should uphold Roe, compared with 28% whi say ruling should be overturned.

Roe vs Wade was a landmark ruling that allowed abortion until 24 weeks of pregnancy, guaranteeing a constitutional right to abortion for almost half a century now. Considering its significance, overruling the decision could be shocking enough to stir the public.

Abortion has persisted as the most contentious issue between coservatives and liberals in the U.S. Although the Chief Justice cautioned that the draft does not represent the final position, apparently, the draft opinion won't be reversed. Five justices already voted to overturn Roe.

According to the American media, at least 26 states are likely to come up with stricter abortin laws as soon as the Supreme Court makes a final decision as the leaked draft indicated.

In response, pro-abortion rights groups are taking to the streets, chanting "Not your body, not you choice." People are concerned about political polarization and social division being exacerbated.
